We hiked the old Monte Sano Railway bed in Huntsville Alabama. It was supposedly built in 1888 by 500 men and draft horses in a matter of months, up a mountain, and then it was gone by 1896. Supposedly, after all of that work, it was dismantled and sold for parts only 8 years later. We want to show you what we found out here because the official story just doesn't make sense to us. The Monte Sano Railway ran from the Huntsville Depot to the Hotel Monte Sano from 1888 to 1896. The hotel had 223 rooms and drew visitors from across the country. Both the hotel and the railway are gone. We found these massive stones out here and our first thought was that they must have shaped rock they found in the woods. Which makes sense. But then you start thinking about what it would have taken to move and stack stones this size across a large fast moving stream, through dense woods, with horses and pulleys. And the plaque at the trailhead says it took two of the four total months just to build the trestle that these stones would have supported. So whatever time was left had to cover surveying, leveling, shaping, moving, stacking, and laying track up a mountain. Here is the thing we keep coming back to. Two of the four months it took to build this entire railway were spent just on the trestle, and that is what the plaque says. So in the remaining two months they surveyed a route up a mountain, cleared it, moved and stacked large stones across a fast moving stream through dense woods, and laid track with horses and pulleys. We are not saying none of that happened. After walking this entire old railroad bed here is where we landed. The Hotel Monte Sano had 223 rooms and drew visitors from across the country including some of the wealthiest people in America, and it opened in 1886. The railway that served it was supposedly surveyed, built, and completed in four months with horses and pulleys, then dismantled and sold for parts eight years later. The stones that held this trestle up are still sitting right here.
